![]() Well rested babies are able to feed better and "play" better, making them happier, in turn, making your life easier! Both my kids were great sleepers once we got a routine going. I felt strongly about this as sleep is THE most important key to success in my opinion. We introduced the paci to my son at around 6 weeks old as he was much fussier due to reflux when he was young) and put into the crib to fall asleep on their own once they were just about ready to doze off, but not completely put to sleep by being rocked or nursed to sleep. ![]() They were fed, put in a sleep sack, given a paci (m y daughter used a paci from 2-4 months old before she found her fingers to suck on instead. ![]() and 12 hours overnight by 14 weeks old and continued 12 hours overnight the entire time they were in the crib. Both, very different children, were notable happier babies once we got on a good schedule/routine around 2 months.īoth of my children were going 5 hours between feedings over night at 5 weeks old. I have achieved success with these schedules, with both of my children. It can provide structure and give your family more freedom, as you know when you can schedule different things throughout the day, which I found particularly helpful when I had my second baby, with a toddler eager to get to the park and be on the go. A daily routine also helps cultivate a calm household where everyone can help pitch in, knowing the expectations for the day at particular times. A baby and mama that are well rested and well fed, is the goal and what helped me raise happy babies. Providing a predictable daily pattern they can come to expect, helps them to feel safe, reduces anxieties of unexpected changes and unfamiliar expectations and helps them feel happy and secure. I am a firm believer in a "flexible daily schedule/routine". Set yourself and your baby up for SUCCESS!

Waffle House remains a privately held company today - Rogers’s son, Joe Rogers Jr., is now the chairman - and does not disclose annual sales figures, but in 2005 the company claimed that it uses two percent of all eggs produced in the U.S. Its empire now spans across a full half of the 50 continental states, and though it’s concentrated in the South, Waffle Houses can be found as far north as Ohio and as far west as Arizona. The company began franchising in 1960 and in the beginning grew slowly, but expansion picked up in the ’70s and ’80s. The original Waffle House is now a museum. Co-founder Forkner once explained how he and Rogers, who were neighbors, started the chain: “He said, ‘You build a restaurant and I’ll show you how to run it.’” They named it Waffle House because waffles were the most profitable menu item (and therefore, what they most wanted customers to order). The vision: combine fast food, available 24 hours a day, with table service. ![]() The first Waffle House made its debut in 1955 in the Atlanta suburb of Avondale Estates. Here now, a look back at the legend, and for fans near and far, everything you need to know about Waffle House. The chain, which claims to have sold its billionth waffle sometime in 2015, recently saw both of its founders, Tom Forkner and Joe Rogers Sr., die within just two months of one another. The chain has inspired numerous books, including a first-person narrative from a former line cook titled As the Waffle Burns as well as one by a pastor called - naturally - The Gospel According to Waffle House. Is it the cheap prices? The no-frills atmosphere? Those illustrious hash browns that somehow taste better when you’re intoxicated? The waitresses that inevitably call you “honey”? Likely some combination of all of the above, plus a little bit of that inexplicable Southern diner magic - call it the Waffle House je ne sais quoi. Slinging humble breakfast fare around the clock, Waffle House inspires deep and unyielding loyalty in diners like few restaurant chains ( except maybe Whataburger) can. Since its founding in Atlanta some 60 years ago, the restaurant has been elevated to cultural touchstone, now sprawling across 25 U.S. No 24-hour diner chain inspires quite the same cult following as Waffle House. ![]() (see Boff, & Lincoln, 1988, Zwahlen, & Schnell, 1999 and Green et al., 2008 for partial lists of some of the variables). Then there are viewer variables such as age, eye disease, night myopia, the Mandelbaum effect, etc., etc. The twilight value also fails to take account of many other important visual factors such as size, shape, masking, viewing time, visual field location, driver adaptation, lighting uniformity, spectral wavelength distribution, etc.Simply determining illumination (or even luminance) at the pedestrian location says little about contrast and visibility. The illumination at the pedestrian's location then tells an incomplete story since contrast will depend on illumination (and reflectance) of the distant background. For example, the torso of a pedestrian may be seen against a distant background of sky, trees, buildings, etc. In many cases, object contrast may depend on a background that is far in the distance behind the object. The twilight criterion completely ignores the background. The twilight envelope concept does not capture such huge effects. Drivers could respond to pedestrians wearing white clothing at a distance of 52.3 meters and to pedestrians wearing black clothing at only 11.3 meters, a difference of 463%. For example, one study (Wood, Tyrrell, & Carberry, 2005) evaluated detection distances for pedestrians with different clothing under the same conditions. It also ignores reflectance and hence luminance, which is a critical variable. Illumination is only a measure of the light falling on a surface, such as a pedestrian. As explained elsewhere, contrast is the luminance ratio between the pedestrian and the background luminance, as calculated by the Weber fraction. People do not see light, they see surfaces which are defined by edge contrasts. Most importantly, visibility depends on contrast, not illuminance. How could 3.2 lux apply to all situations? Reading a newspaper requires a different amount of light from seeing a pedestrian or playing baseball. ![]() Different tasks require different amounts of light. There can be no such thing a single illumination level that is adequate for all tasks.Like the use of the computer program, this is wishful thinking: It tries to take a very complex phenomenon and simplify it to a level where people with no experience or knowledge of the subject matter can claim to know the right answer. The twilight envelope is very much like the computer PRT program. All such attempts are unreliable for many reasons. The twilight value is an attempt to use illumination as a visibility criterion. For headlamps mounted 27 inches high, for example, they estimated distances of 260 feet at the roadway, twilight distances of 175 feet at headlamp level, and only 80 feet at a driver eye height of 42 inches. Owens, Francis and Leibowitz (1989) estimated different twilight distances at different heights above the roadway. The "twilight distance" is the point down the road where illumination falls below 3.2 lux and the envelope ends. Drivers should have reasonably good foveal vision in the area illuminated above 3.2 lux but relatively poor foveal vision when illuminance falls below this twilight envelope. This has led Owens, Francis and Leibowitz (1989) to propose the visibility concept of "twilight envelope," which suggests that an illumination of 3.2 lux, the level at the end of civil twilight, can act as a rough lower bound for adequate headlamp illumination. Assuming moderate reflectance, it is also in about the range where many visual functions begin to decline as photopic vision declines and scotopic vision begins. Naval Observatory describes civil twilight as a time for "terrestrial objects to be clearly distinguished," 1 an assertion supported by performance data on tasks such as acuity, contrast sensitivity and reaction time. One common attempt appeals to the concept of the "twilight envelope".ĭuring civil twilight, approximately the first half hour after sunset, ground illuminance in good weather declines by a factor of about 100, from roughly 330 lux to 3.2 lux. Some have attempted to evaluate visibility and ignore all these considerations by taking the short-cut of using simple illumination measures. Visibility is determined by physical contrast and contrast thresholds which are subject to a large number of viewer and environment variables. The top number in any time signature indicates the most important thing of all: the number of beats per measure. It’s never notated a second time unless the metre changes mid-song (more on this later). These are the most well known time signatures:įour-Four (or Common) Time: notated as orīear in mind that the time signature of any composition is always indicated at the beginning of the piece. So, despite the fact that the loud accents are played every second and fourth beat, for some reason, this’ll still feel like a ONE – two – three – four kind of beat. Also, taking the lyrics and bass lines into consideration, you’ll see that the most important parts of the song still land on or around every first beat. Turn on some classic rock or gospel music, listen closely and you’ll notice the drummer pounds a little harder on every second and fourth beat (one – TWO – three – FOUR). You might be wondering: “But what about styles that place the accents on every second and fourth count?” You’re right, this is called a backbeat. The various metre-based variations are what we call time signatures. This fixed sequence of accents and non-accents defines the metre. On the other hand, something like the waltz and most of its variants are played with the accent landing once every three beats, so: ONE – two – three – ONE – two – three, etc. While they’re played ‘randomly’ in some songs, in most pop, rock, hip-hop and R&B tunes, you’ll hear an accent played at a steady rate, usually once every four beats – or claps. These moments are called accents in music theory. Music can be foot-tapped, hand-clapped or simply slapped along to and if you pay attention when you do either, you might notice the urge to tap, clap or slap a little harder at certain moments.
